I like Scumm

And what is scumm? And why do you like it? Whether it makes more sense or not, SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion, and it has changed my life.

You know, back in the day there used to be fun games that one could find to play on the computer. Today's games [gripe, gripe, gripe] are all in the all-too-serious strain, full of gore and inappropriateness. My experience with the "good old days" was founded mostly on one game-producing company: LucasArts. But, that was the old LucasArts. Now, they don't put out anything like what they used to. Who wouldn't long for the days of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, or Full Throttle?

Oh man, well now you can. It's called ScummVM. It's actually been around for a while, but I've only recently tried it out. Whilst thou? Then just plug in some old abandonware, and you've got a great time! Lots of LucasArts games at dynaLink.

  • I remember, back in the day. . . going down in the basement and working on scrapbooks while you played Monkey Island, and giving you a hard time about all of the "comments" during the game. Those were the days. . .

  • Yeah, those were the days. Comments like,

"You can't match my witty repartee."
"I could, if you would use some breath spray."

    or

    "I can't rest until you've been exterminated!"
"Then perhaps you should switch to decaffeinated."
